On 27 September 1825, the world’s first passenger train, hauled by George Stephenson’s Locomotion No.1 carried over 400 people along the Stockton and Darlington Railway.

The rail industry will mark 200 years of train travel with a year-long national public engagement programme called Railway 200 (starting in January 2025).

A wide variety of activities, initiatives and partnerships are being considered to enable Railway 200 to tell the story of the past, present, and future of the railway.

Railway 200 will inspire, enable and empower organisations, communities and individuals to create and deliver their own activities, events, and projects, which together will roll into a year-long celebration.

Railway 200 hopes to leave a genuine legacy beyond 2025 by supporting and enhancing the industry’s efforts to close the skills gap.

We want to show our passengers the big and small, everyday things we are doing to make them feel cared for. After listening to passengers, we’ve come up with messages and creative to use on OIS and totems in our stations, as well as on our social media channels.

You’re free to pick what other messaging to display on your screens – choosing what’s relevant for your station. We suggest you have 2 – 3 on display as our testing showed these work best for our passengers when displayed together. Feel free to change them when you like based on what works for your station.

For example, if your water fountain isn’t working, please don’t use the ‘feeling thirsty’ creative until it’s fixed or if you haven’t upgraded your lighting – don’t use the ‘new lighting’ creative.

Network Rail has joined digital Shout and the wider rail industry to remind the public that mental health support is just a text message away. Make a Connection, encourages people to text the bespoke keyword ‘Journey’ to 85258 to access the Shout service for free and confidential mental health support, 24/7.

It forms part of the rail industry’s efforts to help reduce suicides on the network by engaging with the public upstream and signposting them to mental health support services at the earliest opportunity.
